Mob Mentality

We did it...300 miles Saturday night at the Frisco Relay for Life.  The collective can be much stronger than the individual in some instances, this being one.  It was also a time for individuals to push their limits and strive for more.  I congratulate all of you that participated in the relay and I know next year will be even bigger and better.  We were able to raise over $1700 for cancer research!

If you have not noticed...IT'S HOT!  When the temperature gets over 80 degrees it is time to start thinking about hydration needs and issues.  A general rule is half your weight in ounces daily.  Now that you are out in sometimes 100 degree temps running, jumping and performing push-ups...a water bottle is required and water stops are mandatory!  Pace will drop considerably when you begin this heat training so do not be discouraged if your times are slower.  As you progress and get acclimated to the temperature you will begin to regain your pace.  The advantage to this type of training is that when fall training begins you will feel faster because of the cool temps.  Here are some tips to running in the heat.

Remember the general rule of hydration?  It's hard enough to drink that much water so how can we stay hydrated?  Answer...fruits and vegetables.  Not only will fruits and vegetables hydrate you but they will give you the daily nutrients and vitamins you need for good health.  Runner's World has an article on this and you can find some great summer recipes on Mark Bittman's website.

Strength, Form, Minimalist and Running.
What came first?  Just like the egg, no one will actually know...not even the chicken.  Here are some push-ups you can perform to make you stronger and it will also help to keep your form longer.  I put these 5 videos in order of difficulty and in sets of 5.  Play around with them, keep your push-up form...straight as a board from head to toe, and you will see results quick.

And the infamous POWER BURPEE.  It was said to me this weekend that it must be called the burpee because that is what you do before you puke!

Vibrams, Water Shoes, Newtons, New Balance, and Chuck Taylor's
Which shoes are the best for running?  All were used in the Relay for Life.

Have fun this week, be safe, enjoy the first week of summer...or the last week of school, and I hope to see you out for a run.

It's all relative, -Ham
